LEHIGH VALLEY’S PREMIERE SPORTING EVENT
Mission Statement
To attract, stimulate and promote sporting events and
entertainment within the City of Allentown and The Lehigh Valley, through the use
of city and county parks and recreational facilities, and to encourage
participation by all area residents.
Summary of Facts and Purpose
The purpose of Lehigh Valley SportsFest has always been to promote sports in the Lehigh Valley by offering local athletes the chance to compete in the sport of their choice. We offer spectators the opportunity to see a variety of great competitions . . . all in incredibly beautiful park settings throughout the city of Allentown. By focusing our attention on improving the sports aspect of this event, we strive to make each SportsFest more memorable than the last for the athletes and spectators alike.
SportsFest is constantly growing and evolving. It is our goal to add to the quality of the event each year by strengthening current tournaments, attracting new sporting events, and providing exposure for the lesser-known sports. We have grown from 16 sporting events in 1997 to 40 events in 2004. We provide the venue, exposure, support, and equipment, so that our over 30 local sports organizations can best showcase their talent.
Even though SportsFest attracts participants and spectators from other areas, this is primarily a community event. We encourage the involvement of the local community either as participants or spectators. We have an estimated 10,000 amateur athletes participating in their respective sporting events, and approximately 150,000 spectators enjoy all that SportsFest has to offer.
Proceeds from SportsFest have been used to upgrade various City Recreation Department functions and facilities. We encourage participation of inner city high schools through their volunteer efforts, and we reward them accordingly. Specific examples are the involvement of Dieruff and William Allen High School ROTC and cheerleaders.
